Service Management in Traditional Enterprise Asset Management

Traditionally, the goal of maintenance organizations has been to maintain critical assets so that they are available to help generate revenue and support key infrastructure.

Individual assets are monitored and maintained, but often in isolation. Typically, there is no formal correlation between the assets and the output that they help to deliver. In order to demonstrate the value they provide to the corporation, maintenance organizations must view assets in a different manner. The true value that an asset provides lies in the alignment of its performance with the business objectives of the corporation.

Maintenance organizations typically have performance metrics that they work to achieve, such as 95% uptime. However, most organizations do not have formal processes in place to monitor and track performance.

Maximo 6 enables internal maintenance organizations to run their operations like businesses. End users of the assets are viewed as "customers". Service Level Agreements ( SLA 's) are put into place. MAXIMO users can proactively manage their workloads to ensure that SLA 's are met. They also know that their daily work efforts are in synch with the priorities of the corporation. This elevates the importance of the maintenance organization, justifies the value that they deliver, and provides an incentive for every Maximo user to work towards improving the service levels that they deliver to their internal "customers".

Service Management in IT Asset Management

IT Asset Management involves managing an organization's IT Assets such as PC's servers, printers, and network devices from purchase to disposal. The goal of IT Asset Management is to minimize costs, decrease liabilities, and enable more effective planning.

Service management for IT assets is related to improving the level of services provided to users and to the business directly. Managing assets to reduce costs and minimize risks is not only good to do, but critical in this economic and corporate compliance environment. But the only reason organizations have and maintain IT assets in the first place is to deliver a critical service to users and to the business. Service management includes.

"The central question that a business has to ask is, "Where do I begin?" That will require a careful assessment of the current situation and desired future state."
